Gender, form, and etymology

Etymology:

The new genus-group name is a combination of the Latin appl¯anatus (a combination of the prefix ad–, which becomes ap– before words beginning in –p–, and serves as an emphasizer; the noun pl¯anum, meaning, “level” or “flat” ground; and the suffix –¯atus, which is used to form adjectives from nouns indicating resemblance), meaning, “flattened”, and the noun forceps, meaning, “tongs” or “pincers”.
